3A MONACO
Carlos, EA1DVY, will be active as 3A/EA1DVY from February 23rd to March 3rd. Activity
will be mainly on topband SSB, around 1843 kHz. Also, he will participate in
the CQ WW 160 DX SSB Contest (February 23-24th) and ARRL International DX SSB Contest

5X UGANDA
Remember to look for Nick, G3RWF, to once again be active as 5X1NH from February 23rd
to March 22nd. Activity will be limited because he is on holiday. Activity will be on
all bands except 160m and 6 meters. Modes will be CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK. He will use
100 watts and wire antennas. QSL via G3RWF.
8R GUYANA
Just a reminder that operators Phil/G3SWH and Jim/G3RTE will be active from Georgetown,
Guyana, between February 22-29th. The licence has already been issued and the callsign
will be 8R1PW. As there have been two operations from Guyana in 2007 which used mainly
SSB, their activity will be on CW only on all bands 160-10 meters. Propagation and QRN
permitting, they plan to have two stations on the air for as many hours every day as
possible. Their main objective is to work as many European, North American and ROTW
stations on as many bands as possible.

LY90 LITHUANIA
Look for 11 special event stations to be active with the prefix LY90 from February 16th
through March 16th, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of independence in the Lithuanian
Republic. It was on February 16th, 1918, when Lithuania declared itself independent.
The Act of Independence of Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Nepriklausomybes Aktas) or
Act of February 16 was signed by the Council of Lithuania proclaiming the restoration
of an independent State of Lithuania, governed by democratic principles, with Vilnius

from Caye Caulker (NA-073) during the first week and from Ambergris Caye (NA-073) during

Art Phillips,NN7A, is working from another island in Belize as V31JZ/p namely South Water Caye
(NA-180). Art is also running 100 watts mostly in CW and some SSB on the IOTA frequencies on
160-10m from Feb 22-26. This will be his seventh activity of this kind from a coral island only
using a solar panel and a battery as power source. QSLs direct to NN7A or via bureau.
VP6 DUCIE ISLAND
A group of operators are QRV as VP6DX until of February 28. Activity is on 160 to 6 meters

Petrus, ex-3Y0E but currently ZS6GCM/mm, will be a team leader for a new scientific
team going to Marion Island for 1 year. The arrangements for his activity from ZS8 are
in progress now. Rhynhardt states, "Currently we try to collect some equipment for
Petrus to make his activity more complete, delivering another most wanted DXCC entity
to you at high level." Look for a new ZS8 dedicated Web site to be activate (it is now

(CQ Announces Expansion of WPX Award Program - Digital Modes Added Along with New Bands).
Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor, CQ Amateur Radio, provides the following press release
dated February 14th:
"CQ magazine and WPX Awards Manager Steve Bolia, N8BJQ, have announced several changes
to the WPX Award program in response to feedback from program participants. The changes,
effective immediately, add new bands and create a new Digital WPX Award.
Under the new rules, contacts on all bands between 160 and 6 meters will count for WPX
award credit. In addition, new band endorsements will now be available for 5 MHz, 10 MHz,
18 MHz, 24 MHz and 50 MHz contacts. A separate Digital WPX Award has also been added for
contacts made on RTTY, PSK and other keyboard modes, with 300 confirmed prefixes required
for the basic level of the award. Digital-mode contacts will also count toward the
existing Mixed award, as will those prefixes worked on the newly added bands.
Details on these and other changes will be published in the March 2008 issue of
CQ magazine and are posted along with the March issue highlights on the CQ magazine

that the fifth Antarctic Activity Week will be held from 18 to 24 February.

XR7W: ACCIDENT --->
The XR7W team experienced horrible weather conditions on
Wager Island (SA-053) They arrived around noon on 9 February and were forced
to leave some 24 hours later, after a dreadful stormy night spent trying to
operate, communicate with the Chilean Navy and fight against gale force winds
and pouring rain. "I had a last frenetic hour on 17m running EU at 5q/min
rates under a piece of plastic, hand keying on my knee and paperlogging until
the captain gave the final order to leave", Zoli, HA1AG says. XR7W went QRT
with some 2400 QSOs in the log.
Once on the mainland, the team had a serious car accident - their van
"slipped of the gravel road and hit a rock frontally and turned upside-down".
Zoli and his friends (Vlad/RV1CC, Marco/CE6TBN and Yuri/RA0FU) were
hospitalized at Coyhaique, were they were diagnosed with cuts, bruises and
several broken bones.
Their first priority at the moment "is to get out from Coyhaique", Zoli says.
Damages and additional costs are estimated in excess of 11,000 euros, and "if

out of the DXpedition to Mozambique for July, and they are looking for one or two
more operators to join them.
They plan on arriving in Maputo on the 16th of July and be picked up by the folks
from the Blue Anchor Inn where they will be operating from this July. The same group
will take them back to the airport on the 31st of July for their return home.

AC6V - SILENT KEY
Rod Dinkins, AC6V, of Oceanside, California, passed away Saturday, February 16.
An ARRL member, he was 77. Many hams considered Dinkins, the author and developer
of the Web site www.ac6v.com, to be the final word on anything to do with ham radio.
His Web site has more than 130 pages covering thousands of Amateur Radio-related topics,
everything from amps (A) to impedance (Z); some hams have said that if a topic is not
found on or linked to Dinkins' Web site, it's safe to say that topic does not exist in
the Amateur Radio world. Dinkins was also the author of a number of ham radio books,
including FM101x: Using FM Repeaters and DX101x: HF + 6 Meters DXing. Dinkins started
in radio in the late 1940s with his Knight Kit Ocean Hopper receiver, listening in to
the ham bands. In 1977, he received his Amateur Radio license with call sign WA6WTO.
He served as an Aviation Electronics Technician from 1951-1955. Re-entering civilian life,
Dinkins spent four years as an electronics instructor, followed by two years as a vocational
electronics teacher at a junior college. For more than 30 years, Dinkins worked in the
aerospace industry as an electronics technical writer. He was a member of the San Diego
DX Club (SDDXC) and the Palomar Amateur Radio Club (PARC), and was the former newsletter
editor of the Northern California DX Club (NCDXC). Son Jeff has hosted his father's Web
site for the past five years and has plans to keep it up and running; Jeff plans on getting
his Amateur Radio license and applying for his father's call sign. Dinkins is survived by
his wife Karla, sons Jeff and Steve and two grandchildren, Rory and Ewan. A funeral with
full military honors will take place March 13 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in
San Diego.
